EUROTIER 2026: EP199 for piglets recognised as an innovation

European Protein’s fermented rapeseed meal and seaweed protein for piglets has received DLG’s Recognised Novelty designation. Scientific evidence and field experience support its use to improve piglet robustness, gut health and growth.

DLG’s Innovation Commission has recognised European Protein’s EP199 for piglets ahead of EuroTier 2026. The product is listed as a Recognised Novelty in the category Farm Inputs and Technology for the Use of Farm Inputs and will be presented on the Innovation Boulevard when EuroTier opens in Hannover in November.

EP199 is made from fermented rapeseed meal and seaweed and can be included in pre- and post-weaning piglet diets as an alternative to soy protein and fish meal. While Danish producers primarily know EP199 from sow feed, the product is already used for piglets in several European markets, including Italy and Hungary, with commercial experience now also emerging from Denmark.

“For pig producers, the priority is more robust piglets and strong production results. EP199 is the same fermented complementary protein that many Danish producers already know from their sows. Its use for piglets is supported by research and experience from producers across the EU, and the Danish experience adds another interesting perspective,” says Pia Sørensen, Nutrition Development Director at European Protein.

Danish farm reports higher growth after introducing EP199

European Protein has published field experiences from commercial trials with Danish pig producers, conducted in collaboration with the veterinary practice Porcus.

At a farm near Haderslev, daily weight gain in the nursery had dropped to 363 g during a Streptococcus challenge. After EP199 was introduced as part of a broader program of changes to increase the robustness of the pigs, it rose to 525 g, above the level before the Streptococcus challenge. Farm manager Henrik L. Juhl also reports an easier day-to-day operation on the farm.

“I would definitely recommend EP199 for piglets. We’ve seen a really positive effect here,” says Henrik L. Juhl.

The experience has also led Porcus to test EP199 in other herds.

“At Porcus, we put prevention at the centre of our work with herd health. It has certainly whetted our appetite because we subsequently tested EP199 in other herds and saw similar results. That makes us think this may be a highly effective tool we have just added to our toolbox. As a result, it is a tool we expect to continue using in the future,” says Kristian Havn, veterinarian at Porcus.

Experience from pig herds across Europe

Pig producers in several EU countries use EP199 for piglets both pre- and post-weaning, including producers in Italy, Hungary and Denmark.

European Protein makes the product from rapeseed meal and seaweed using its solid-state lactic acid bacteria fermentation technology. Piglet producers can include EP199 in pre- and post-weaning diets as an alternative to soy protein, fish meal and other protein sources.

Home mixers can buy EP199 through European Protein’s distributors. Producers using complete feed can contact their feed supplier about availability.

EP199 at EuroTier 2026

EP199 will be displayed on the Innovation Boulevard at EuroTier in Hannover from 10–13 November 2026.

European Protein will exhibit in Hall 16, Stand C12, where visitors can meet the European Protein team as well as representatives from its Italian distributor, FeedPro, and Dutch distributor, Feedura. The team will be available to discuss scientific documentation, trial data and field experience from European pig herds.
